STB EXTENDS DEADLINE FOR FILINGS POST-SHUTDOWN

The U.S. Surface Transportation Board is extending certain filing deadlines as it strives to get back on track after the 16-day federal government shutdown.

Any material due to be submitted to the STB from Oct. 1 through Oct. 16 is now due no later than Thursday, Oct. 24, the agency said in a statement Friday.

Any filings or submissions that arrived during the shutdown will be treated as if they were received on Oct. 17, when the agency reopened, the STB said.

The rail regulatory agency also postponed an Oct. 22 public hearing on mandatory competitive switching for railroads, citing the government shutdown.

The hearing, requested by the National Industrial Transportation League, which has asked the board to change its rules, will be rescheduled, the STB said.

NITL is proposing some shippers located in terminal areas be granted access to a competing railroad if there is an interchange within a reasonable distance.
